Nadege Forde-Vidal is a London based social historian with a degree in ancient history, and a masters in both Egyptian Archaeology and Museum Studies and to mark Black History month, Nadege who has worked at Chiswick House since 2019 but also collaborates on a number of local history projects with heritage sites, archives and local secondary schools, will introduce us to the research she has done for the Black Chiswick through History project at Chiswick House and Gardens. This year this project has delved deeper into the the lives of some of the men, women and children of African heritage associated with Chiswick House and estate in the 18th century. The talk will explore the life of one of these individuals – James (or Jim) Cumberlidge – who has recently also been the focus of a research project at Chatsworth. Jim was Lady Burlington’s friend and confidante for almost 20 years and this talk will explore the documents, paintings and letters that reveal Jim’s fascinating life story and personality.
