Victoria will be leading our first walk of the year around the Leg O’ Mutton Reservoir and back for a drink afterwards. A short walk to take in the spring delights of the Leg o’ Mutton Reservoir. The mile-long perimeter path gives excellent views over the reservoir where species of bird can be seen. Leg O’ Mutton is designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Cormorant, heron, tufted duck, and even breeding common terns can be seen. Bats roost in the enormous Hybrid Poplar trees dating back to the 1850s. A great opportunity to walk and talk.
Furry friends welcome but must be on a lead at all time within the reserve!

There are rhinestones, feathers, frills, tassels and more, which all add to the thrilling performances given by celebrities and their dance partners. What you may not know is the BBC show exclusively uses a Croydon based manufacturer, DSI, to make the costumes – and that DSI offer a ‘Behind the Seams’ tour. Experience the wonder that is the costumes as seen on Strictly Come Dancing and view some of them up close during the production process. An in-depth talk will explain DSI London’s role in helping to produce the costumes and a tour of the premises will enthral all those who come. More information can be found in the newsletter, at the next Branch meeting or by emailing [email protected]

Bernard O’Keeffe is a local author of the four novels including the DI Garibaldi series, ‘The Final Round’, and ‘Private Lessons’ which are set in Barnes. The third book in the series, ‘Every Trick in the Book’, will be published shortly. Prior to his success he worked in advertising before becoming a teacher and taught for many years. According to his website, he has a few claims to fame, but counts playing football with Nick Hornby, giving Clare Balding interview practice, teaching members of Mumford and Sons and Noah and The Whale, having lunch with George Best and nearly being recruited as a spy as some of his most significant achievements. Hopefully he will share many of these stories with us.

Explore the social history of gin! From it’s arrival on our shores almost 350 years ago, gin is behind tales of royalty, vice, religious upheaval and social revolutions in Westminster. See the footprint of a vast lost palace, visit Georgian slums before discovering the cocktail heaven of the “Roaring Twenties” at the grand Savoy Hotel. From Empire to the latest “gin craze”, it’s a chance to hear the fascinating stories behind the drink described as ” history in a glass”! Martin Millers quote sums up our tale: “Gin has created social revolutions; made laws and broken laws… it’s not just history in a glass, it’s romance and adventure too”. Join Dr Helen Naylor, an official City of Westminster Guide to explore the rehabilitation of gin via Georgian law-making, William Hogarth’s iconic ‘Gin Lane’ and emergence of respectable distillers like Gordons.
Helen was our Christmas meeting speaker, so we’re sure she is bound to provide a fascinating tour! Please let us know by 22 March if you would like to join in as we suspect places will go fast when the booking opens on 25 March! Meet under the clock at Charing Cross station @11.20am. The walk lasts c2 hours and cover 1.5 miles Cost £17 (we will book the ticket via Surrey Fed once you have paid BWI)
